About The Artist

Alain Jules Hirwa is a poet and photographer from Rwanda.
His work is rooted in stories of theoretical and aesthetical identities, migration and cultural preservation. His chapbook “Hairpins” was published by Akashic Books in 2023, and his manuscript “Dear Zoe” was a finalist for the 2025 Sillerman First Book Poetry Prize. Alain Jules’s photography has been exhibited or forthcoming at L’Institut Français du Rwanda, Kigali Public Library, and L’Espace (with the latter funded by Goethe Institut). He has participated in collective photography exhibitions in Kigali, Boston and London.
